Loveridge in form 29
November
Competing in the Sefton Park UK
Cross Country Challenge meeting against some of the best in the
country Toby Loveridge, turned in yet another excellent
perfomance when he finished 16th overall in spite of being at
the lower end of the Under 17 age group. Included in this was
the Mid-Lancs League where Toby was second and with Chris
Hesketh(9th) and Jake Helm(13th) retained Liverpool Pembroke
Sefton`s dominance in this age group. Read More

Boardman back 29 November
The UK Cross Country Challenge
including the European Trials came once again to Liverpool`s
Sefton Park. Incorporating the local leagues it is an
opportunity for the ordinary runner to race against the best in
the country. From a Liverpool Pembroke Sefton senior point of
view the big plus was the return of Jimmy Boardman, missing for
a few years but running as fluently as ever. He turned a few
heads as he slipped through the large field and although still
well down overall in 101st place he was fourth in the domestic
battle with only three Liverpool Harriers in front. A few more
races under his belt and he will once again be looking to top
the Merseyside scene. Read More

Double first for LPS 6th November
Liverpool Pembroke and Sefton had a good day at Burnley in the first
of the Mid-Lancashire Cross Country League fixtures. Pride of place
goes to the Under 17`s with Toby Loveridge not only cruising to
victory but towing David Forrester and Mike Bride into 3rd and 4th
places respectively and easily securing the team result.

Under 15s continue to
progress at Mansfield 1 November
At the English Cross Country

creditable 15th but some way short of expectation. Toby
Loveridge(9.39.70), Mike Bride(10.30.60) and David
Forrester(9.35.70) were 15th and the B team of Chris Hesketh((10.12.05),

Kirsty in great form 19th October
Liverpool Pembroke Sefton star, Kirsty Longley, was in
great form at Southport's Victoria Park in the Asics Natterjack 10K
Road Race, comfortably taking first in the Women's race with 38.44,
a personal best that she will try to lower to sub-38 before the year
is out.
The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton Under 17 and Under 15 squads were at
Sutton Coldfield for the National 3 Stage Road Relay Championships.
The club has a good record in this event and it was no surprise they

Sammy Rashid showed he has not lost his talent and liking for road
running when he placed 3rd over 40 in the Great North Run on 5th

injury Sammy is obviously back in good form.

Alistair shines 5th October
The Northern Athletics Young Athletes Relays were held at the
picturesque Croxteth Hall on a sunny afternoon and provided some
early winter season racing opportunities for clubs. There is always
a pleasant surprise packet and this year it took the form of Under
15 Alister Nelson. The Burscough Priory schoolboy had only taken up
serious running with the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton a few months ago
but was so highly rated by coach, John McCarten, he was given the
tough lead spot in the three stage race. In spite of facing the best
in the north in his first race he showed great maturity to come home
in 9th place in 10.52. As he is at the lower end of the age group
and available again next year this was even more impressive. It was
to be the club's best time although both George Curran(11.19) and
Sean Kirkbride(11.19) put in strong runs and edged the club home in
7th.The B team of Kyle Nicholls(12.35), Warren Turner(12.28) and
David Reece(12.35) were 23rd.

Olympian Membership.
At the club's Annual General Meeting on Friday, it was agreed to add
an additional category of membership, that of Olympian membership.
This would be awarded to any LPS athlete who competed for their
country at the Olympic Games. It was unanimously agreed to make Mike
Rimmer, the club's first recipient. We are extremely proud of Mike's
achievements and grateful that he has
worn the LPS vest when competing in both regional and national
competitions. This has undoubtedly raised the profile of the club,
both locally and nationally and inspired other youngsters to take up
the sport.

August Round Up
The final Div 2W Northern League match at Litherland had a
distinctly end-of-term feeling with the promotion and relegation
issues virtually decided. A good turn out from the club secured
second place on the day and third overall. Perhaps the 400m was the
best result with Harry Doran(49.7) and Nathan Hilton(49.8)
demolishing the opposition and then later together with Mark
Grimshaw and Callum Burns recording a very useful 3.25.5 win in
taking the 4 x 400m relay. Read More

Olympic Disappointment for Rimmer
Huge disappointment for Michael Rimmer Michael suffered the worst of
luck at the Beijing Olympics contracting food poisoning at the GB
team preparation camp in Macau. He looked distinctly uncomfortable
in the first round of the 800m but nevertheless rose to the occasion
winning in 1.47.61. In the semi-final he was never really in
contention and struggled home 6th in 1.48.07.

PB for Michael Rimmer and new club record 29 July
Michael
Rimmer continues to make fantastic progress at 800m and has finally
ducked under 1.45.00. In a star studded field in Monaco Michael was
brilliantly placed third with 200m to go when the pacemaker, Sammy
Tangui (Kenya), failed to get out of the way in time and Rimmer ran
into him. By now the leaders were gone but Michael stuck gamely to
the task and came home 6th behind the winner Yuriy Borzakovskiy of
Russia ((1.42.79). He was, however, rewarded with a personal best
time of 1.44.68 and will be greatly encouraged as he makes his way
to Beijing.

Michael Magnificent 27 July
Michael Rimmer was at the Aviva London Grand Prix meeting at
Crystal Palace, the
last major event before he heads off with the British Olympic team
to their pre-Olympics camp in Macau. The UK 800m champion was
conscious that the week previous in Barcelona he had run a quick
time even though elbowed badly into sixth spot in the finishing
straight. He was determined to stay out of trouble on this occasion
and it paid off handsomely as the Canadian Gary Reed fell in the
early stages of the race disrupting those around him. Michael stayed
wide and tracked the pacemaker, Tangui of Kenya, through a first lap
of 50.69

Les Williams Retires 22 July
After serving Pembroke and now LPS for over 40 years Les
Williams
has finally retired. As a coach, official and administrator he had
made a huge contribution to the sport both at club level and
Merseyside County. At a special presentation ceremony he was given
some quality glassware from the club and county to remind him of his
time in the sport. His wife, Brenda, was presented with a beautiful
bouquet, appropriately purchased from Bill Hartley's farm shop. The
club will miss his gentle presence.

Rimmer moves up another Gear 20 July
Michael Rimmer's 800m Olympic preparations continued as he tackled
another strong international field in Barcelona. A slow first lap of
54 seconds guaranteed a close, sharp finish with barely a second
covering the first six. The Moroccan Laalou edged the verdict with a
time of 1.44.85 with three Kenyans, a Spaniard and Rimmer in close
attendance. Michael was given sixth in 1.45.89 a season's best time
and he will be well satisfied with this Iberian outing. He goes into
a final Aviva Grand Prix meeting in London with his confidence
boosted as Beijing begins to loom.

Michael Rimmer stormed to a third

Birmingham. He crossed the line with three fingers raised to
signify the first person in 32 years to achieve the feat since
his hero the legendary Steve Ovett. His time was a modest
1.49.13 but the manner in which he controlled the race before
destroying the opposition in the finishing straight was
extremely impressive. His Olympic dream is realised and he is
bound for Beijing. He becomes the fifth man in the Liverpool
Pembroke Sefton combined history to achieve the honour after

Gloom at Carlisle 6th July
Poor weather and a poor turn out contributed to the LPS gloom at
Carlisle for the third of the Northern League encounters. But the
one person who can always raise a smile is Kirsty Longley who took
the 1500m once again in 4.59.2 and secured a second spot in the
3000m with 10.42.8. Rachel Hutchinson was another good winner with a
Hammer Throw of 31.8m. Abby McComb, Grace Stewart and Becky Foster
completed the women's squad and there can be no praise too high for
the points they garnered across a variety of events.

Rimmer back on course 2 July
By his high standards Michael Rimmer
has had an indifferent run up to the Olympics. Among other
performances he has recorded a 1.47.2 800m in Berlin and a
1.47.10 in Ostrava, season`s best by a UK runner but some way
off other international performers. However, this was turned
around in Milan as he won a quality race in 1.46.10 with
something to spare.

Nathan continues fine run 29

Liverpool Pembroke Sefton's Nathan
Hilton continues to impress. At the National Junior League match
at Wavertree he was the winner of the 400m with 49.5 seconds,
not quite at the same level as two recent sub-49 postings but
enough to come home relatively untroubled. This caught the eye

Three Liverpool Pembroke Sefton one

the best result came from Nathan Hilton who broke through the 49
seconds barrier with 48.97 narrowly shading club colleague Harry
Doran on 48.99 and Jack McGinn with 49.02. If there were an
England 4 x 400m relay championships the club would be prominent

Billy Clarke London Olympic Marathon 1908

100 years ago the Olympics paid their first visit to Britain the
marathon was run from Windsor to London. The
Marathon course had previously been 25 miles long. For the 1908 race
the previously agreed
starting line was moved to the Home Park at Windsor to allow the
Royal Family to view the start; the finishing line was not changed.
The resulting distance - 26 miles, 385 yards - has been the standard
marathon distance ever since London. Sefton Harrier Billy Clarke

very impressive 48.58 looking every bit a champion and his
confidence fully recovered. The only challenge came from his
Liverpool Pembroke team mate Nathan Hilton breathing down his neck

Danny Higham was sixth in the same final with 50.13.

Close fought encounter 7

throughout the competition. The gap was a mere 8 points and with

Grade 1 performance from
Adam Thomson 1 June
In the third of the rotating Young
Athletes Premier League matches Liverpool Pembroke Sefton were
at Preston Arena for an exciting encounter even though LPS were
only to emerge third on the day. Beaten narrowly into second
spot Adam Thomson probably deserved the nod for best club
perfomance with a personal best Under 17 400m in 51.2. He is
coming into form at the right moment with major events in the
offing. The club`s talented three middle distance `musketeers'
duly collected maximum points in their events with David
Forrester taking both the 800m(2.02.7) and 1500m(4.19.1), Toby
Loveridge the 3000m(9.29.2) and Chris Hesketh the 1500m
Steeplechase(4.59.8). All were untroubled. The Shot Putt also
provided a double victory with Brad Brennan (11.15m) and Simon
Birch(9.26m). Similarly Jessica Broady was far too good for her
opponents at both Discus(21.82m) and Hammer(27.52m). The club`s
strength at Under 17 was underlined by another double in the
High Jump Billy Williams(1.73m) and super-understudy Simon

Hesketh and Forrester best
in the North 25 May
Liverpool Pembroke Sefton had
a profitable time at Wigan in the Northern Under 17 and Under 15
C hampionships.
The current spectacular form of Chris Hesketh and David
Forrester was confirmed as they
were both convincing champions. Hesketh stamped his authority on
the U17 1500m Steeplechase from the outset leading throughout
and apart from a few hesitant hurdle clearances came home with a
useful time of 4.33.47 that could easily have taken him under
the magic 4.30 if pressurised.

Michael Rimmer sets his
targets for the season 22 May
Michael ran the 800m at the Watford

himself disappointed. He told Athletics Weekly `The pacemaker
was a 1500m guy and I felt I was jogging at halfway. I`m a bit
disappointed...I`d have liked another second but it will do'. He
then declared his `targets'. `I`d love to win the Trials 800m
three years in a row., not many have done that, and I know Coe
and Ovett didn`t manage it.' Asked about a second goal he simply
said `Olympic final'.
He goes on now to Belgium and Oslo
for further Grand Prix meetings

A tough time at Leeds 18 May
Travelling to Leeds to take on powerful opposition in the shape of
the local club, Sale Harriers Manchester and Blackpool was never
going to be an easy task for Liverpool Pembroke Sefton especially
not at full strength. Still there was much to savour. At Under 17
the club`s rising middle distance stars enjoyed success especially
Chris Hesketh who won out on a dip in the 400m Hurdles(61.7) but was
well clear in his favourite event the 1500m Steeplechase in a
respectable 4.39.0. David Forrester forsook his 1500m specialism to
run the 3000m and left the opposition in disarray to record 9.11.7.
Other A winners in this age group included Tom Stafford(400m 52.9),

Forrester and Christian set targets,
Kirsty win Waterloo 5k 4th May
Another busy weekend for the Liverpool Pembroke Sefton Athletic
Club. Hosting the first Young Athletes Northern Premier League match
at Wavertree the local club dug deep to produce some significant
performances and markers for the season. The sprinters still have a
significant presence as evidenced by the double Under 17 win over
400m of Adam Thomson(52.00) and Mike Stam(57.1) plus a similar
double in the U13 200m by Alex Higham(29.2) and Andrew
Freeman(29.5). But elsewhere other disciplines are advancing. The
throwers, for instance, are having spectacular early season success
especially Mick Jones who dominated the U17 Hammer(35.07) and
Discus(32.47) ably supported by B winner Brad Brennan with 31.78 and
27.69. Brad enjoyed his A moment collecting the Shot with 11.09.
Jess Broady(26.45) and Abby McComb(16.28) enjoyed similar double
glory in the Hammer. Read More

Have you joined the LPS PB/08 Club?
The track and field season has hardly begun and dozens of members
are already posting personal bests. Take Rose Hutchinson's Throws
Group for example...
Out of nine members 6 have already got PBs. They are Drew
Atherton(U15 Javelin 36.01m), Emma Carter(U17 Javelin 29.62m) plus
four U20`s Mike Jones (Javelin 38.44), Rachel Hutchinson(Hammer
29.38m), Emily Carr (Javelin 32.69m) and Charlotte Christian (Hammer
35.23). Jess Broady, Mike Jones and Kevin Jones are also poised to
join the club shortly.
Charlotte Christians throw qualified her to represent the Isle of
Man in the Island Games next year but if she can pass 40m before
June that will put her in contention for spot in the Junior
Commonwealth Games in India this year. A big incentive!

Fine start to the season for LPS athletes 20 April
Traditionally the summer track and field season starts for most
athletes with the Liverpool Harriers Open Meeting at Wavertree. It
was an occasion blessed with very cold weather but there were still
many encouraging performances for the club to relish. Sarah Beth
Wroblewski (Yr 5) marked her first year in the sport with a quick
11.7 for 75m and equally delighted was Tawanda Lungu (Yr 7) who
posted 11.0 over the same distance. Kyle Nicholls (Yr 8/9) was an
untroubled winner of the 1500m in 5.12.5 as was Joseph Hanlon (Yr 7)
in taking the 800m in 3.30.8 followed by no fewer than 4 other LPS
athletes( Andrew Hutchinson, Jake Oldham, Darren McDonald )and
David Reece all under
3.47, a very encouraging sign for the club's middle distance

Austin (Aussie) Hey
Aussie Hey who has died aged 76 will

in the 1950`s but later migrated to the Midlands and joined his
mate Charles Gains at the Halesowen Athletic Club. When Charlie
returned to Merseyside Aussie took on a major role at Halesowen
and raised over £300,000 for track refurbishment and a new club
house. His funeral will be at Our Lady and All Saints RC Church,

Busy Weekend for LPS Athletes
Bernie Murphy finished an amazing
18th in a field of 10,000 in the classy Bath Half-Marathon.
Going through 10K in 33.38 he clocked a very respectable 1.11.29
for the full course. He is really enjoying his running these
days and this sets him up well for the London Marathon in April.
Meanwhile at the Inter Counties Toby
Loveridge (Mersey) has enjoyed a fantastic first season with LPS
but his luck ran out at the Inter-counties Championships at
Nottingham's Wollaton Park. Leading briefly in the Under 15
event disaster overtook him on a sharp bend, he pulled a
hamstring and was forced to drop out. A frustrating experience
that happens to most athletes at some time or other.

Rory
Storm Updated 18 March
Further to this item being published a number of people have come

I was reminded by Ringo Starr's presences at the opening ceremony for the 2008 Capital of
Culture, of
a young man who played a very significant part in the Merseybeat era
of the late 50s and early 60s.
Alan Caldwell aka Rory Storm was the very successful lead singer
with his band the Hurricanes, (not bad for a boy with a speech
impediment) Ringo Starr was the drummer with the
Hurricanes until he was lured away by Brian Epstein to replace Pete
Best at the Beatles. The stories of the goings on behind this move
are quite famous and I won't go into them suffice to say they make
good reading so look them up. Paul McCartney dated Alan's sister
Iris apparently impressed by her legs...she was a semi-professional
dancer (she later married Shane Fenton who you may know better as
Alvin Stardust) Paul McCartney was a frequent visitor at their home
at 54 Broad Green Road Paul wanted Rory to record `I saw her
standing there' but Brian Epstein vetoed it.
When he was not being Rory Storm, Alan was also an athlete of some
talent winning the Pembroke club steeplechase championship at that
event in 1958.Some of the older members still remember Alan with
fondness. In fact we still have the Rory Storm Trophy which was
awarded for the club steeplechase champion.
I published a page on Alan in this website in 2005 within the
history section.
Alan tragically died aged 33 in 1972 I happened to
meet his former friend and manager (Sam
Leach) in 2006 at party and we chatted for some time about Alan
his running and his influence on local music. Its a 35 years now
since his death and unless you happened to be about at that time or
you knew the story it is possible that this little bit of club
history might be forgotten hence forgive me taking this opportunity to bring him to the attention
of some of our members who may not have heard of Alan.

LPS athletes lead county
schools teams 8 March
The English Schools Cross Country
Championships were hosted this year in Liverpool`s Sefton Park.
A good course and excellent organisation was enjoyed by athletes
from all over the country. Although not among the more
successful teams Liverpool Pembroke Sefton athletes performed
well. David Forrester led home the Merseyside team in the
Intermediate Boys race in 54th place closely followed by Toby
Loveridge in 58th spot. Merseyside closed in 7th team.
Running in the same age group Paul Roberts was 156th and Chris
Hesketh 240th for the Lancashire squad. The club`s sole
representative in the Junior Boys race, Sean Kirkbride was 94th
but had the distinction of leading home his Lancashire
colleagues to 18th placing.

cross country championships and a fine 6th slot in the National

The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton runners were at Alton Towers, not for
the entertainment facilities but for the spectacular National Cross

but the club`s Toby Loveridge was a in a confident mood finishing
10th in the Under 15 race and with the support of Chris Hatton(77),
Ed Rimmer(93) and Sean Kirkbride(136) gave LPS a fine 6th team spot
and second Northern club home. John Meakin was 161st.

LPS Youngsters Sparkle 10 February
Sporting heroes are not always high profile, sometimes that
accolade goes to straightforward grafters. Such is the Liverpool
Pembroke Sefton Under 13 cross country squad. At Hyndburn for a Mid-Lancs
Cross Country fixture Kyle Nicholls(5), Warren Turner(7), Andrew
Hutchinson(13) and Jonathan Bride(26) pulled off a great team
victory with Darren McDonald(27), David Reece(28) and Ben Haines(31)
eagerly dancing attention. They are the joy and revelation of the
club's winter programme.

Michael Rimmer Merseyside Athlete of the Year 5th
February
At the glittering awards ceremony in the new Echo Arena on Monday
night Michael Rimmer was named as the inaugural Merseyside Athlete
of the Year. He said, `It`s a massive honour to receive this
award...a recognition for all the hard work I have put in. I have
proved I can hold my own with the top 10 in the world and I believe
there`s a lot more to come. I`m training hard and hoping to make an
impression at the Olympic Games in Beijing'. Michael beat off strong
opposition from sprinter Anyika Onuora, middle distance runner Vicky
Griffiths, high jumper Martyn Bernard as well as rising stars David
Forrester and Katerina Thompson. It is fantastic news that the first
time this award is made it goes to an LPS member

Under 15s again among the medals 26 January.
Liverpool
Pembroke Sefton were at the notoriously hilly Roundhay Park, Leeds
for the Northern Cross Country Championships. The Under 15 trophy,
won convincingly twelve months ago, was returned and a new squad
prepared to defend the title. As usual the competition was fierce
and although performing strongly Toby Loveridge(20), Mike Bride(49),
Chris Hatton(54) and Ed Rimmer(61) saw they were out of contention
and gathered for the trek home. An announcement that they had indeed
finished third team sent them scurrying back to the presentation
stand for the bronze medals, an award which will boost their
confidence ahead of the National Championships later in February. As
usual there was a good supporting crew of Sean Kirkbride(64), Joe
Meakin(84) and Adam Goldfarb(159).Read More

Ashall
confident and assured at Sheffield 20 January
The 400m is a tough sustained sprint outdoors but indoors, on a
banked track with runners breaking on the second lap, is even more
demanding. The Liverpool Pembroke Sefton squad has demonstrably
mastered this technique over the years and none better currently
than 17 year old Wayne Ashall. Having collected last year a Under 18
European Gold relay medal he was full of confidence for the opening
rounds of the indoor season including the Northern Under 20
Championships at Sheffield.

No change of career for Michael Rimmer! 17 January
Members may well have been startled if they had turned on their TVs
recently to watch the Great Edinburgh International Cross Country
meeting at Holyrood Park. In the short event(4.3K) Michael was
introduced, ran largely at the back of the field but still had a
creditable time only 74 seconds behind winner Andy Baddeley(Harrow).
Don`t worry, this is definitely not a change of career but part of
his 800m winter training in preparation for the Beijing Olympics! He
has also run a 5 mile road race at Wythenshawe, finishing 17th in a
respectable 25.56 behind winner Tom Lancashire (Bolton) 23.32.

League match at Lancaster University.

Pembroke 1951
Leslie Drewary of Formby has sent some photos he took of
Pembroke athletes at the famous Dunlop and Police Sports
handicap meetings in 1951. There is a picture of the 2
mile winning team at the Police meeting taken on 30 June
1951 (they never had leagues in those days) containing
Ken Bruns, Trevor Holt and Arthur Price...the fourth
member eludes me. The trophy is at least two and a half
feet tall! Also a men's mile medley relay team
containing Charlie Kelly and Norman Ashcroft. Elsewhere
there is a picture of our women's sprint relay
team(16.6.51) including Doreen Ashun and Irene Leach.
Leslie says he doubts if there is anybody around who
remembers them. Wrong, Leslie, I was almost certainly at
both meetings! |
