England AAAs have once again invited the Harriers to select teams to compete in the hugely enjoyable "Tom Pink Relays" to be held at the Sheffield EIS on Saturday March 3rd.

This is an indoors event comprising continuous relays on the banked indoor 200m track as well as a full programme of Sportshall field events.  The meeting is for U11s and U13s and there are medals and trophys to take home for winners and runners up.  Last year the event was a huge success for Harriers with two club athletes setting new records for these events.

If you are under 11 or under 13 and would like to take part in the event, then please let the club know as soon as possible - email your team manager through this site, or let them know at training next week.  The club will be arranging for a coach for the trip over to Sheffield.

There will be no training on Tuesday 14th February in Frodsham during half term.  The decision was made because of holidays and personal commitments by coaches and helpers so there would be insufficient people to supervise the sessions.  Training back to normal on Tuesday 21st February.

Northern XC Champs report Print

Four Harriers made the trip over to Pontefract Park, home of the longest horse racing circuit in Europe, for the Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships at the weekend.

With blizzards on the motorway the night before (and horrendous travelling for those who stayed overnight), Saturday was a gloriously sunny day and the race course venue was a great place for about 2,000 runners from across the North of England to take part in the annual event.

Georgia, Jenny and Kelsey took part in the U13 Girls race, and Chris was in the U13 Boys race. Both races were run over the same 3.1km course, which started uphill, and finished uphill too, providing a strength sapping race for all concerned.

In the U13 girls race, Georgia placed 18th in the 170+ strong field with a time of 12m47s. Jenny was next home for Harriers in 121st in 15m10s, and Kelsey next in 162nd (16m35s).

In the boys race, Chris placed 47th in a time of 12m24s.

All results are on the PowerofTen website, but the official website gives no time for how long it took to pack the tent away!!

Three in a row! Print

On Tuesday night, Peter Allen, club chairman, presented the annual awards for the best performances in the Cheshire Cross Country Championships.

With the largest team of runners from Harriers taking part in the Championships for a number of years, there were plenty of athletes to choose from.

Peter awarded the Girls trophy to Georgia Aston-Massey, who took the gold medal in the U13 Girls' race and automatic selection to represent Cheshire in the Inter Counties Cross Country in Birmingham in March.

The Boys trophy was awarded to Christopher Larkin, who finished 8th in the U13 Boys' race, and potentially also a place in the County team.

For both Georgia and Christopher this was the third year in a row that they had won these trophies, and both are looking forward to trying to hold onto them for another year through the mud and rain at next year's championships!

The Harriers had some of their under 11 girls and boys representing Cheshire in the "Aviva Fun In Athletics" North West Regional final, staged at the EIS stadium, Manchester at the weekend. This was a competition for the best available young athletes from all of the counties in the North West of England and gives a first taste of representative competition.

In the teams there were five girls and two boys from the club who had been selected for the county, each playing their part to put the points on the score sheets.

Charlotte Allen, Alex Hurst, Emelia Povall-Clark, Natasha Treharne and Grace Wilding were the girls competing in relays and field events, the team finishing in a creditable 5th place overall.

Charlotte took the 14th place, and 5th place team points, in the javelin with 10mtrs. She placed 14th in the long jump with 1m78 where she teamed up with Emilia (11th, 1m80) and Grace (12th, 1m80) to take 4th team points in the standing long jump.

Alex took 11th place in the target throw and 8th team points with her Cheshire teammate. In the balance test, Natasha placed equal 17th and Emelia was 21st, combining to score team points for 6th position.

Grace took part in the speed bounce event, placing 13th with a score of 48, and with her Cheshire teammates took the 3rd place points for this event.

The two boys in the county team were Jacob Birtles and Luke Southerton again each scoring valuable points which helped to put the team in 2nd place overall.

In the target throw, Jacob took the 16th place and 5th team points. Luke had two good results in the speed bounce 51 for 4th place (and 1st place points for Cheshire with a teammate from Crewe & Nantwich) and 1m90 in the long jump taking the 8th place to bag the 2nd place points with two other Cheshire long jumpers.

Full results are on the sportshall website here.
