As often at this time of year, there was a double-header of events for Harriers with cross country at Boggart Hole Clough on Saturday and NW Sportshall League on Sunday at Kingsway.  Special mention to Charlotte, Beth, Joseph and Aidan for representing the club at both matches!

Full results of both events are now online:-

Manchester Area XC League - Boggart Hole Clough

Whilst the weather was sunny and calm on the day, the heavy rains in recent days had ensured that Boggart lived up to its reputation of being possibly the muddiest event on the MACCL calendar.

Harry and Aidan got the racing off to a fine start in the U11s, with Harry making his debut for the club in the Manchester Laegue.  Harry ran strongly to finish 54th overall in 10:09, and Aidan ran with the U11s to finish in 65th in a time of 12:38.

The U13s then were the first to tackle the notoriously muddy section through the woods with the boys and girls racing together.

Matt was the first Harrier through the tape in a fine 29th place and a time of 12:35.  Charlotte was the first Harrier girl to finish, backing up her strong performance at the previous round placing 13th in a symmetrical 13:13.  Sister Beth came through next in a time of 13:47 in 28th place.

Joseph was the second male Harrier finisher, completing the course in 14:37 and placing 49th.

Ellie battled hard after taking a tumble on possibly the only hard surfaced part of the course and ran well through the line to finish 83rd in a time of 16:00 with plenty of runners still to finish.

In the U17s, Ben looked to have put in his best placed finish of the season crossing the line in 4th place.  However, since the race it transpired some of the leaders had been sent the wrong way so we are awaiting a final adjudication on the result from the officials.

Son and dad Chris and Matt lined up with 491 others in the final race of the day with the course already well churned up.  Chris ran a well executed race and placed 4th U20 in a time of 35:38 (32nd overall) to place him well in the season's overall League competition.  Matt took a little longer in his first season through the mud, placing 257th in a time of 43:54 (27th V45).

Next time...

The next Manchester League XC race is at Kenworthy Woods in Wythenshawe on 2nd December.  If you haven't yet raced over cross country but can't wait to get a little muddy (!) or get some practice in ahead of the Cheshire County Champs at Delamere in the New Year, get in touch with Nick Massey to sign up for the remaining races in the League - no entries on the day though!

Sportshall Match 2

There was a big turnout both for the club and for Wirral and West Cheshire in particular as the club faced up against St Helens and Warrington too in the 2nd match of the NW Sportshall League on Sunday with some excellent team performances that still leave everything to play for in trying to get teams through to the NW League Finals in the New Year.

U11s

With 136 points, the U11 girls squad of Mia, Hannah, Ellen, Olivia, Katie, Jessie and Ruby gave great all around performances to finish the match in 3rd place overall.

The U11 boys also placed 3rd, narrowly missing out on 2nd spot scoring 168 points overall with Charlie, Oliver, Alex, Charlie, Jack, Jacob, Jack, Lewis and Kai demonstrating the advantages of a big squad.  They also took top points in the 2 lap race and chest push.

U13s

Jasmine, Charlotte and Beth represented the club in the U13 girls match, but with limited numbers even their excellent performances meant they left the match with 92 points in 5th place against much larger squads.

The U13 boys placed one spot higher in 4th overall, just 3 points off 3rd position.  Ben, Joseph, Ewan and Harry all put in maximum effort, with Ewan's dominating performance in the 6 lap race a particular highlight.

U15s

103 points were secured by the U15 girls team of Maddy, Millie, Libby and Chloe to grab 3rd place in the match, including maximum points in the 6 lap races.

In the U15 boys, the solo team of Aidan took on a full squad from West Cheshire.  Demonstrating the benefits of participation, Aidan racked up 60 points single-handedly to take 2nd place in the match for the club.

Next time...

On 3rd December its another double-header weekend as the 3rd match of the NW Sportshall League takes place, also at Kingsway in Widnes.

By our reckoning, every squad has a great chance of making the finals in the New Year, so please put the dates in your diaries to get as many athletes out as possible so we don't leave any points on the table!

Thanks to all the parents, officials and club organisers without whom our athletes wouldn't be able to put in such great performances!!  Well done everyone!

Cross country squad - teamer Print

To help manage attendance at races this winter, the club is trialling a free app called "Teamer" which uses text messages and emails as well as a free app and website to communicate with athletes.  If its successful, we would probably start using it for other events such as T&F matches and Sportshall events.

Not only does it help team managers get in touch with athletes and make sure that reminders about upcoming events get through, it can also help to keep records of who has attended competitions throughout the year.

As a first step, if you are a parent or athlete who is registered for the Manchester Area XC League this year, please can you click on the appropriate link below to "join" the team.  If there are multiple athletes in the same squad, you'll need to do this twice, and if you've got multiple children in different age groups you'll need to click the link for both age groups.

And if you have any difficulties or queries on it, contact Matt!

NW Sportshall League - Match 1 Print

Monday, 16 October 2017

Thanks to all the parents, officials and athletes for making the first match of the Sportshall Season start so well.  The full results of the match are on the Sportshall website at www.sportshall.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/North-West-League-Rd1-Widnes.pdf

U11s

The girls squad of Macey, Jess, Hanna, Mia, Martha, Ellen, Katie and Saffron scored well across all disciplines and the team placed 3rd with 168.5 points, just 1 point off the second placed spot.  Maximum points in the 2-lap and 4-lap races set the girls up well, as well as good scores across all the jumps and throws and a 2nd placed finish in the relay.

The U11s boys scored 142.5 points, but in their case this was just 1 point more than the team in third place so they placed 2nd overall.  Jack, Jacob, Charlie and Oliver were strong in all areas, and took the victory in the relay to put them in a strong position to try to achieve a place in the season end final.

U13s

Charlotte, Beth and Jasmine comprised the U13 girls team, and scored well between them with 62.5 points, but unfortunately a team of 3 found it difficult to accumulate large numbers of points to overhaul the other teams, and they placed 5th overall.

There were also just three boys who could make it to the match, with Ben, Harry and Matthew giving it all to score 91 points and place 4th.

U13s is usually a strong age group for the club, so could all athletes and parents for this age group please support your teammates and make every effort to turn out for the next match as both squads still have good chances to make it through to the finals!

U15s

There were unfortunately no U15 boys from the club at this match, and with just 1 boy from all of the other clubs at this match an opportunity was missed to score well here!  Maybe next time?

However, the U15 girls squad of Millie, Libby, Maddy, Lydia and Izzy were close to taking the top spot of the teams, scoring 87 points - the top two teams were tied on 90!  With top marks in the 6 lap race, the girls squad are looking strong at this point in the season.

Next event

The next match in the League will also be at Kingsway on Sunday 12th November.  With some of the team members also running Cross Country on the Saturday, we need all athletes to support their teammates and get big teams out to score well!

Manchester Area XC League - Heaton Park Print

Monday, 16 October 2017

Congratulations to the squad of athletes that turned out to Heaton Park in Manchester for the first match of the Manchester Area XC League on Saturday.

Under unusually balmy weather for October, the cross country spikes were dusted off and put into action for the first of the five meetings this season. U11s are rested for the first race of the season, so it was U13s and upwards that were racing on Saturday over a course which has a real mix of undulation, thick mud, soggy grass, tricky tarmac footpaths and uneven surfaces.

U13s

The first race of the day was the mixed U13s, with Charlotte, Beth, Jasmine and Ellie racing in the girls competition and Matt & Joseph in the boys.

All of the runners except for Matt are in the lower year of the age group, and all ran strongly. First girl home over the 3.2k course was Charlotte (9th) in 14m19s, closely followed by twin Beth in 14m32s (11th). Ellie placed 73rd (17m22s) and Jasmine placed 80th (18m44s) in her debut Manchester League race. Overall the girls placed 10th as a team, a very strong performance.

In the boys race, Matt & Joseph represented the club well. Matt came home 27th overall and was the first Harrier to complete the joint U13s race in a time of 13m44s and Joseph came home in a 71st place in 17m10s.

U17s

With no club runners in the U15s, Ben was next up in the U17s competition, also making his debut in a Manchester League race, and also in the lower year in the U17s age group.

Over the 6.1km course Ben put in a very strong performance to place 10th overall in a time of 23m32s

U20s

Chris stepped up to racing with the seniors over the full 9.6km distance for the first time on Saturday making his debut as an U20 after missing much of the track season with injury.

Chris placed 96th in the overall race, and 10th in the U20s competition in a time of 40m29s.

Seniors

Matt was another runner making his debut in the Manchester League, and enjoyed a strong run to place 26th in the V45 category and 184th overall in a time of 44m12s.

Full race results are available at www.race-results.co.uk/results/2017/maccl171.htm

Next event

The next XC match in the series is Saturday 11th November at Boggart Hole Clough, which is often one of the muddiest races of the season, and where the U11s run for the first time.

There's still time for other runners to join the League, but we need to get everyone registered in advance of the race, so if you want to run at Boggart Hole Clough please contact Nick Massey and he can sort out the entries.

London Marathon - club allocation Print
Written by Website
Wednesday, 04 October 2017

Harriers, along with other clubs affiliated to England Athletics, is allocated a place in the London Marathon.

This year we are proposing to hold a ballot to allocate the place to a club member who wants to run the race in April next year, and with the rejection / acceptance letters from the national ballot landing on people's doormats this week, now is the perfect time to give someone a second chance to get a place in the ballot.

We will run the ballot according to the rules below. These aim to prioritise club members who are actively seeking a place in the race, and ensure the place is fairly allocated.

Please see below for details of how to get your name in the ballot!

  • The club is expected to be allocated one place in the 2018 London Marathon
  • One entry per person only
  • Please do not enter unless you fully intend to run the 2018 London Marathon
  • Entry is for the individual only - the place cannot be passed on to anyone else
  • The entrant must pay all fees and charges associated with the entry (approx £35, to be confirmed)
  • Entry is limited to those who are
    • Eligible to run the London Marathon under the race rules (e.g. over 18 on the date of the race)
    • Club members who joined on or before 1st September 2017
    • Parents of club members who joined on or before 1st September 2017
    • Brothers or sisters of club members who joined on or before 1st September 2017
    • Decisions on eligibility will be confirmed by the Club Secretary
  • Requests to be included in the ballot must be received by midnight on 28th October 2017 and the full list of applicants will be published on the club website as soon as possible after that time.
  • Requests to be included in the ballot must be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with the word "Marathon" in the message title so it is not overlooked
  • Entrants will be placed into three "buckets" to prioritise the draw. With only one place available, the allocation will go to someone in the first bucket, if there is at least one applicant. If not, then the second bucket, then the third.
    • First bucket - paid up club members with membership prior to 1st September 2017 who have been rejected from the main national London Marathon 2018 ballot
    • Second bucket - paid up club members with membership prior to 1st September 2017
    • Third bucket - all other eligible individuals as described above (e.g. parents, siblings etc)
  • All entrants will be allocated an individual number. A random draw will take place on or shortly after 29th October 2017 and the winner will be notified by email. All entries will be drawn and the order of the draw will determine the order of a reserve list if the winner is unable to run, subject to VMLM transfer rules
  • If for whatever reason the club should not be able to secure an official club place in the 2018 London Marathon, the club will be under no obligation to secure a place for any individual who has been successful in this ballot
  • Applicants should note that the club place is NOT transferrable
  • No-one who has entered this ballot will take part in the draw to determine the results
  • Halton & Frodsham Harriers Athletics Club reserves the right to amend these rules at any time and to implement them as it, at its absolute discretion, see fit whilst adhering to the fundamental principles of fairness, transparency and equity

Cheshire T&F - Ashton - small but perfectly formed! Print
Written by Website
Tuesday, 01 August 2017

Sunday's match in the Cheshire Track & Field League saw 7 club athletes running, jumping and throwing with plenty of PBs and strong competitive performances.  Whilst the team size was small, with lots of athletes away on holiday, all who turned out should be very proud of their performances.  And thanks to the team managers, coaches and officials from the club who continued to give up their spare team to support our athletes!

Full results are now on the Powerof10 website at http://powerof10.info/results/results.aspx?meetingid=190565

U11 Boys

Finley Jones represented the club in the U11s category, and took part in the 75m (11.2s - PB), 600m (2m11.9s - PB) and Long Jump (3m52 - PB) continuing his progress across all three events in his first season, with highlights being a second place in the 75m A race and 3rd in the Long Jump.

U13 Girls

Twins Beth and Charlotte were the only club members in the U13 Girls category.  Charlotte ran in the 100m (16.1s - PB), 800m (2m45.8s - a strong 2nd place) and jumped 3m06 for a Long Jump PB.

Beth jumped a big PB in Long Jump with 3m13, debuted with 8m49 in the Javelin and ran 3m02.1 in the 800m.

U13 Boys

The squad of Matthew, Aaron, Ben and Ewan all put in good performances as the final four competitors for the club.

Matthew ran in the 200m with a PB of 30.8s and followed that up with a PB in the 800m running 2m44.4.

Aaron also competed in the 200m and 800m with PBs in both events too in times of 31.8s and 2m56.2.  He followed those with a debut in the High Jump clearing 1m15.

Ben Sutcliffe also took part in three events, running 35.9s in the 200m (PB), 3m13.9 in the 800m and throwing the Shot to a distance of 3m80 for another PB.

Finally, Ewan Macnab ran the 800m where he placed 2nd in a PB time of 2m34.3 and move up to 3rd in the club's Powerof10 all time list for the U13B 800m discipline.

And finally...

With so many good performances amongst such a "compact" team, just think how well the team could score overall if we managed a more sizeable turnout!  We know that not all athletes can make every event, and some regulars are missing due to injuries, but there's still one League match to go at our "home" event (though its at the Warrington track!) on Sunday 3rd September.  So far this year 25 club athletes have represented the club at Track & Field League meetings - if you haven't managed to hit the track yet this year, please get the date in your diary and let's see a strong and sizeable team turn out to take part in and support your teammates as they put their training to good use!

Track & Field Fixtures - 2017 Print
Written by Website
Thursday, 30 March 2017

Fixtures for the coming season have been handed out to all athletes at this week's training sessions, but just in case the notes didn't make it home (!) here are the details of the club's fixtures for the coming season, with some brief explanations of what they are!

Cheshire Track & Field League

This is the only league that the club participates in, and we encourage ALL club members to ensure that they take part in at least one of these fixtures each season.  And hopefully take part in all four!

The League competitions follow a standard series of events from U11s through to Seniors including individual events and sprint relays.  There is a real mix of competition standards and these are a perfect opportunity for young athletes to take their first steps onto competing at an athletics track with their teammates and contributing to team overall scores.  Participation levels count as much as out-right performances - a young sprinter running a 600m race for the first time will pick up valuable team points even if they finish right at the back, so our team managers try to make sure that all available scoring slots are filled.

Don't wait to be asked to turn up - the more the merrier!!  And if you've got any questions, just ask a team manager or official at training.

Cheshire T&F meetings usually fill a whole afternoon and can be an enjoyable day out in the sun (sometimes!) with your teammates - bring a picnic, bring the family, cheer on your team!

The dates and venues for this year are:-

Match 1 - Sunday 7th May - Ellesmere Port

Match 2 - Sunday 2nd July - Crewe & Nantwich

Match 3 - Sunday 30th July - Ashton Under Lyne

Match 4 - Sunday 3rd September - Warrington (H&F hosting this event)

Cheshire County T&F Championships

This is a two day fixture held over a weekend where the Cheshire Athletics Association provides the opportunity for athletes to compete against the best in Cheshire.  Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded for age groups U13 through to Seniors (sorry, no U11s!).

It is up to individual athletes to enter for these championships, and we'll post an update on our website and facebook feed when entry forms are available.

Day 1 - Saturday 13th May - Warrington

Day 2 - Sunday 14th May - Warrington

Cheshire County Relay Championships

This is an annual meeting dedicated to relays.  A mixture of sprint, medley and middle distance relays are held across all age groups (U11 through to Seniors).

This is another great opportunity to earn a County medal.  If you are interested in taking part, talk to team managers who will coordinate team selections and entries.

Saturday 22nd July - Crewe

Open meetings

Throughout the year, clubs such as Warrington, Trafford and Deeside put on Open Meetings.  A full range of track and field events will be put on at these, usually with medals awarded for junior races and field events, and are a great opportunity between League fixtures to tune up performance.  These are self entry - just turn up on the day, pay a small entry fee and take part proudly wearing your club vest!  Keep an eye on our facebook page for details of open meetings coming up, or keep an eye out on other club websites for details of new ones they are hosting.

School athletics

Most high schools participate in the Cheshire Schools Athletics Assocation, and select athletes to take part in the Cheshire Schools Championships.  They are run over two separate days with Year 8+ separate from a Y7 event.

Year 8+ - Saturday 10th June - Warrington

Year 7 - Wednesday 21st June - Warrington

Our fixtures calendar is usually up to date with details of upcoming fixtures, but why not pop these days in your diary now and you can guarantee turning out for the club!
