Cheshire T&F - Ashton - small but perfectly formed! Print

Tuesday, 01 August 2017

Sunday's match in the Cheshire Track & Field League saw 7 club athletes running, jumping and throwing with plenty of PBs and strong competitive performances.  Whilst the team size was small, with lots of athletes away on holiday, all who turned out should be very proud of their performances.  And thanks to the team managers, coaches and officials from the club who continued to give up their spare team to support our athletes!

Full results are now on the Powerof10 website at

U11 Boys

Finley Jones represented the club in the U11s category, and took part in the 75m (11.2s - PB), 600m (2m11.9s - PB) and Long Jump (3m52 - PB) continuing his progress across all three events in his first season, with highlights being a second place in the 75m A race and 3rd in the Long Jump.

U13 Girls

Twins Beth and Charlotte were the only club members in the U13 Girls category.  Charlotte ran in the 100m (16.1s - PB), 800m (2m45.8s - a strong 2nd place) and jumped 3m06 for a Long Jump PB.

Beth jumped a big PB in Long Jump with 3m13, debuted with 8m49 in the Javelin and ran 3m02.1 in the 800m.

U13 Boys

The squad of Matthew, Aaron, Ben and Ewan all put in good performances as the final four competitors for the club.

Matthew ran in the 200m with a PB of 30.8s and followed that up with a PB in the 800m running 2m44.4.

Aaron also competed in the 200m and 800m with PBs in both events too in times of 31.8s and 2m56.2.  He followed those with a debut in the High Jump clearing 1m15.

Ben Sutcliffe also took part in three events, running 35.9s in the 200m (PB), 3m13.9 in the 800m and throwing the Shot to a distance of 3m80 for another PB.

Finally, Ewan Macnab ran the 800m where he placed 2nd in a PB time of 2m34.3 and move up to 3rd in the club's Powerof10 all time list for the U13B 800m discipline.

And finally...

With so many good performances amongst such a "compact" team, just think how well the team could score overall if we managed a more sizeable turnout!  We know that not all athletes can make every event, and some regulars are missing due to injuries, but there's still one League match to go at our "home" event (though its at the Warrington track!) on Sunday 3rd September.  So far this year 25 club athletes have represented the club at Track & Field League meetings - if you haven't managed to hit the track yet this year, please get the date in your diary and let's see a strong and sizeable team turn out to take part in and support your teammates as they put their training to good use!

If you want to see the results in order of place / by categories, we've put them on our website here for reference - well done to all the young and old Harriers (and parents!) who took part!  Let's hope we can avoid the clash with this and the Cheshire T&F meeting in future years so we can do both!

Track & Field Fixtures - 2017 Print
Written by Website
Thursday, 30 March 2017

Fixtures for the coming season have been handed out to all athletes at this week's training sessions, but just in case the notes didn't make it home (!) here are the details of the club's fixtures for the coming season, with some brief explanations of what they are!

Cheshire Track & Field League

This is the only league that the club participates in, and we encourage ALL club members to ensure that they take part in at least one of these fixtures each season.  And hopefully take part in all four!

The League competitions follow a standard series of events from U11s through to Seniors including individual events and sprint relays.  There is a real mix of competition standards and these are a perfect opportunity for young athletes to take their first steps onto competing at an athletics track with their teammates and contributing to team overall scores.  Participation levels count as much as out-right performances - a young sprinter running a 600m race for the first time will pick up valuable team points even if they finish right at the back, so our team managers try to make sure that all available scoring slots are filled.

Don't wait to be asked to turn up - the more the merrier!!  And if you've got any questions, just ask a team manager or official at training.

Cheshire T&F meetings usually fill a whole afternoon and can be an enjoyable day out in the sun (sometimes!) with your teammates - bring a picnic, bring the family, cheer on your team!

The dates and venues for this year are:-

Match 1 - Sunday 7th May - Ellesmere Port

Match 2 - Sunday 2nd July - Crewe & Nantwich

Match 3 - Sunday 30th July - Ashton Under Lyne

Match 4 - Sunday 3rd September - Warrington (H&F hosting this event)

Cheshire County T&F Championships

This is a two day fixture held over a weekend where the Cheshire Athletics Association provides the opportunity for athletes to compete against the best in Cheshire.  Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded for age groups U13 through to Seniors (sorry, no U11s!).

It is up to individual athletes to enter for these championships, and we'll post an update on our website and facebook feed when entry forms are available.

Day 1 - Saturday 13th May - Warrington

Day 2 - Sunday 14th May - Warrington

Cheshire County Relay Championships

This is an annual meeting dedicated to relays.  A mixture of sprint, medley and middle distance relays are held across all age groups (U11 through to Seniors).

This is another great opportunity to earn a County medal.  If you are interested in taking part, talk to team managers who will coordinate team selections and entries.

Saturday 22nd July - Crewe

Open meetings

Throughout the year, clubs such as Warrington, Trafford and Deeside put on Open Meetings.  A full range of track and field events will be put on at these, usually with medals awarded for junior races and field events, and are a great opportunity between League fixtures to tune up performance.  These are self entry - just turn up on the day, pay a small entry fee and take part proudly wearing your club vest!  Keep an eye on our facebook page for details of open meetings coming up, or keep an eye out on other club websites for details of new ones they are hosting.

School athletics

Most high schools participate in the Cheshire Schools Athletics Assocation, and select athletes to take part in the Cheshire Schools Championships.  They are run over two separate days with Year 8+ separate from a Y7 event.

Year 8+ - Saturday 10th June - Warrington

Year 7 - Wednesday 21st June - Warrington

Our fixtures calendar is usually up to date with details of upcoming fixtures, but why not pop these days in your diary now and you can guarantee turning out for the club!

Great endurance weekend Print
Written by Website
Sunday, 15 January 2017

The young Harrier endurance squad had a busy weekend, dealing with everything that mother nature could throw at them.

On Saturday, the strong U11G squad got the weekend off to a great start in their race at the fourth event in the MACCL series.

Charlotte placed 11th, leaving her placed 10th overall in the series to date.  Beth came in next in 33rd, Millie placed 40th and Ellie placed 46th.

In the U13B race, Matthew placed 44th in his race, triumphing in the key skill of keeping both spikes for the entire race!

Whilst the ground was a bit firmer, on Sunday the weather was definitely less kind to Chris and Matt running Helsby Running Club's Four Villages Half Marathon.  Pre-race favourite to take the local prize was Richard McGeachie, but ill health meant he couldn't make the start line this year.

Chris debuted over the half marathon distance and recorded a fine time of 1hr26m03s and placed first in the U20s category.  Matt also had a good run coming home in a course-best of 1hr29m21s.

Great running all!!

NW Sportshall League Print

Monday, 12 December 2016

Delayed congratulations to the athletes that represented the club in the last NW Sportshall League match of 2016.

The club had 13 athletes representing, with Ellie, Sophie, Beth, Charlotte, Hannah and Katie in U11G, Chloe, Maddie, Martha and Jasmine in U13G and Harry, Gabriel and Aaron representing the U13B. Unfortunately there were no club athletes turned out in the U15B or U15G, nor in the U11B.

Scoring 135 points, the U11G team finished 5th in a tough and well attended age group. With 118 points, the U13G placed 4th, and the U13B placed 3rd with 83 points.

The final league tables have now been published, and sadly the club has no age group teams making it to the NW League finals for the first time in the club's history. The athletes that took part and scored points for their club and teammates should be very proud of their achievements, but small teams have often meant points have been dropped in relays and field events.

Top performing teams over the year were the U11G who scored 439 points, just 50 points off the 5th place that would have qualified them for the league final. Overall they finished in 7th place. Also close to the prize were the U13B team who placed 6th in their league, scoring 309 points (65 points off 5th place).

U11B finished 9th (140 points, 335.5 points off 5th), U13G were 9th (273 points, 213.5 points off 5th), U15G were also 9th (81 points, 283 points of 5th) and U15B placed 8th with 106 points (151 off 5th). A special "honourable mention" goes to Aidan who was the sole representative of the U15B for the club!

The full league table can be found here and detailed results from all three matches are on the Sportshall website here.

Thanks to all the athletes, parents, coaches, team managers and officials from the club that have supported the Sportshall League through this season - we can come bouncing back next season and see if we can get plenty of squads into the League Finals again!!

NW Sportshall League - Match 1 results Print

Firstly, well done to all of the athletes, officials, parents and "significant others" who turned out for the club on Sunday at Widnes.  It was great to see good sized squads, especially in the girls teams, competing so well.

The full results are now available on the Sportshall website at

Each of the girls teams in the U11s, U13s and U15s placed 4th in their match overall, and considering the size of many of the teams that we were up against these are great outcomes.  Plenty of high scoring A and B points in the bag!

In the boys there was similar symmetry - each of the teams finished in 3rd place in their matches.

Well done to all the teams - and if we can get even more athletes representing the club at the next match we can score even better!!

Club athletes at Sunday's match:-

U11 Girls - Astrid McGrogan, Charlotte Glover, Beth Glover, Mia Holland, Erin Brooks, Ellie Molyneux, Millie Glancey, Lydia Shore

U11 Boys - Joseph Larkin, Ben Sutcliffe

U13 Girls - Martha McVey, Chloe Lea, Jasmin Griffin

U13 Boys -  Gabriel Mikoleizik, Ewan Macnab, Matthew Haslam

U15 Girls - Sophie Howard, Lydia Case, Izzy Hurst

U 15 Boys - Aidan Larkin

Cheshire County Championships 2016 Print

Just three Harriers took part in the County T&F Championships this weekend at the excellent Macclesfield track.

The first competitor to take to the track was Ewan MacNab (U13B) competing in the heats of the 200m.  Ewan qualified from the heats with 31.1s and improved his time to a fine 30.06s (PB) in the final to place 6th in the county.

Chris Larkin (U17B) entered the high jump in the morning session of day 1, and equalled his PB jumping 1m55 and placing fourth overall.  Chris saved his best performance of the weekend for the 3000m later in the afternoon.  Taking on a strong a talented field, Chris took 29s off his PB to cross the line in 9m20.00s with a fine sprint finish to pick up the silver medal.

Luke Southerton (U17B) was the final competitor on the first day from our club.  Luke also jumped well with a best leap of 5m37, placing 6th in the county.

Chris Larkin was the only Harrier competing on Day 2, and he picked up two more county medals to come away with 3 medals from 4 events.  In the triple jump he jumped 10m83 to pick up the bronze medal, and in the 1500 Steeplechase (run without a water jump due to technical difficulties at the track) he placed 2nd to pick up his second silver medal of the championships.

Well done to all who took part, and a special mention to all of the club officials who gave up their whole weekends to make the annual championships a smooth running success!
