Manchester XC League - Final fixture - Stockport Print

Thursday, 07 February 2013

The last Mancester Area Cross Country League race takes place on Sunday 10th February in Woodbank Park, Stockport.

This is a favourite with some of our club runners, with the fearsome "hill" 2/3rds of the way into the course.

Full details of race times, location and the course map are available on the MACCL website.

There are some small changes to the course this year for all age groups at the start of the races.

Once again, the main walking of the course for age groups U11G & B, U13G & B, U15G & B will set off at 11am so that the U11s have plenty of time to return to the start and warm up.

Wellies are usually an essential addition for the course walk for both athletes and parents!!

Over the last few days we've been updating the fixtures calendar for the confirmed dates of the various T&F meetings throughout the summer months. Click on the "Fixtures" button at the top of the website to get details of when they are on.

If you are new to the club, or haven't competed before, here's some information about what to expect over the summer.  Remember, athletics is a competitive sport as well as great fun - and often the points scored by athletes who might not be topping the podium make all the difference in the end of season league tables, so please try to turn out for your club - everyone gets cheered!!

Whilst the details of the match with Wirral, Warrington, West Cheshire, Liverpool and Deeside have not yet been published, it's still possible to be confident about our teams getting through the League Finals.

In the Under 11s, the girls squad will finish no lower than 3rd in their group (and most likely in 2nd place), amassing 440.5 points in total over the three matches, a great result with so many new faces scoring points. The boys team also look to have secured their final spot, probably finishing 4th overall in their league table.

The Under 13 girls also are secure in the finals, with a finish in either 4th or 5th place in the league likely after last weekend's 3rd placed finish. In the Under 13 boys, the battle for finishing first in the league has been settled by just a few points, with the squad finishing in a certain 2nd place, just 9.5 points behind Crewe & Nantwich and setting up a thrilling battle for the league title in the final.

Both of the Under 15s squads also should make appearances in the finals with the girls likely to finish in 4th place and the boys probably taking their 3rd spot.

The match finals are on Sunday 3rd March. Team sizes are limited to 10 athletes per squad, so team managers will be selecting athletes to represent the club for this match based on their performances in the league fixtures this year.

Well done to everyone who has taken part in the league this year!!

This time the Sportshall match takes place at Shavington Leisure Centre (NOT Kingsway in Widnes). Team managers need athletes to be there for 11am so that teams can be properly organised.

The postcode and address for the leisure centre is:-

Shavington High School, Rope Lane, Shavington, Crewe, CW2 5DH

Good luck - let's get all the teams into the finals!!

Tuesday, 22 January 2013

Last Sunday, 5 members of the clubs Under 11 Sportshall team were in action representing Cheshire in the the "Fun In Athletics" Northwest meeting. These regional events around the country are for the best Under 11 Sportshallers and pitch counties against each other for the title of regional champions.

The Fun In Athletics meetings include some different events compared to the NW League matches, such as the Olympic Relay, Target Throw, Hurdles Race and 6 Lap Parlauuf alongside the more well known Standing Long Jump, Vertical Jump and 4 x 1 Relay.

Teams from Merseyside, Isle of Man, Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester were competing against Cheshire at the Sportcity indoor venue in Manchester.

Holly Hickey, Elouise Angus and Charlotte Allen were selected for the girls squad, and took part in a range of field events and races helping the Cheshire team to finish a close 4th place overall.

In the boys squad, Ben Guttridge and Jadon Allen were in the Cheshire team which pushed the Mersey Thunder team all the way, finishing overall in 2nd place.

The 2013 Cheshire County Cross Country Championships were staged in ideal weather conditions at the Reaseheath College Campus, Nantwich last weekend where 12 Harriers took on the task of mastering the course which was deep in mud in parts!

While the Club didn't feature in any of the medals this year, all athletes made a determined effort to finish well up in the field counting well in some team positions.

Richard McGeachie ran well as the only club entry in the Under 17 mens race, taking 14th place in 26min45secs. Under 15 girl Keira Grady had a good 10th place in her event finishing in 14min51secs and has put herself in contention to be picked for the County team of 8 runners to run in the national championships in Birmingham.

The under 13 boys packed well taking the 7th team spot with 60 points.  Individual results were Chris Larkin (8th) 13min41secs, Jacob Birtles (21st) 14min28secs, James Ennis (31st) 15min41secs and Luke Southerton (32nd) 15min44secs.  Chris' run also puts him in with a chance of representing Cheshire in Birmingham for the second year running.

The under 13 girls also combined well to take the 7th team place with 64 points. Scorers were Emily Howard (20th) 17min14secs, Esther Wilson (21st) 17min15secs and Eleanor Jones (23rd) 17min55secs.

Owen Jones was the lone under 11 boy competing for the club, taking the 24th place in his event in 12min04secs. In the under 11 girls race Isla Bellamy finished strongly in 17th place, 12min04secs, and Orla McEvoy placed 28th in 13min47secs.

It was great to see so many Harriers out covering longer distances at the Christmas Fun Run in Castle Park this weekend. Joining some of the cross country regulars there were plenty of new faces who took on a varied course through the park on a glorious sunny December morning!

If this gave you the taste for more cross country running, Nick Massey needs to get entries in for the upcoming Cheshire Cross Country Championships which take place at Reaseheath College (Nantwich) on 5th January. It would be great to see a big Harriers turn out for these championships. And if you enjoy getting muddy, there are still 2 more matches in the Manchester Area Cross Country League in January and February.

Nick's contact details are on the website contacts page, so get in touch if you want to represent your club in any of these races!

The latest set of Sportshall match results were published over the weekend, with Harriers in all age groups on track to reach the league finals in 2013.

The squads of U11 Girls, U13 Boys and U15 Boys are all in 2nd place in their leagues, with the U11 Boys and U15 Girls in 4th place, and the U13 Girls are in 5th place with a crunch match next time out to secure a spot in the finals.

Within the U15 age group, individual performances are ranked as well as the team performances, and its great to see two Harriers at the top of their leagues - Kiera Grady tops the girls scores with 101 points scored, and Ben Sutcliffe tops the boys scores with 98 accumulated in the league to date.

The final league matches will take place on Sunday 27th January with the league finals on Sunday 3rd March.

NW Sportshall League - Match 1 Print

The results for the first NW Sportshall League match were published over the weekend, and make great reading! (Click here for the results). Across all 6 age categories the teams were in the top 3 spots at the event, and the U13 Boys narrowly took top spot, by just half a point, to win the match.

Each club in the league will take part in 3 matches before the league points can be properly totted up, so the league standings currently are a bit misleading as some teams (e.g. Crewe & Nantwich) have completed 2 matches, whereas Harriers have completed 1 so far.

Under 11s

Overall, the U11 girls squad came in 2nd place, scoring 153 points behind Crewe & Nantwich's 160. Highlights from the 15-girl squad were Charlotte Allen (1st A Standing Long Jump, 2nd A Chest Push), Elouise Angus (1st A 2 Lap, 1st B Speed Bounce), Holly Hickey (1st B Standing Long Jump, 2nd A Vertical Jump) and Skye Marsh (2nd A Speed Bounce).

In the U11 boys, their massive team of 24 athletes also finished in a strong second place behind Crewe & Nantwich, scoring 147 points overall. Jadon Allen (1st A Standing Long Jump), Adam Hodgkinson (1st B Standing Long Jump), Max Hardy (1st B Chest Push) and Ben Guttridge (1st A Chest Push) all scored highly, with their teammates also contributing valuable team points.

Under 13s

The U13 girls had a 12-strong team, and the U13 boys had a 9-strong team for the event. The girls, including good performances from Natasha Treharne (2nd B 2 Lap) and Elizabeth Wright (2nd A 4 Lap), were 3rd overall in a tightly fought match, just behind Southport Waterloo and Crewe & Nantwich.

The U13 boys won their event, with 158.5 points compared to 158 points for Crewe & Nantwich. Tom Price was 1st A in the 2 Lap race, and 1st A in Shot Put. Luke Southerton took 1st B points in the 2 Lap race and 2nd A points in the Speed Bounce. Christopher Larkin took 2nd A points in the Standing Triple Jump and Luka Tron scored 1st A points with a massive 2m23 leap in the Standing Long Jump.

Under 15s

The U15 squads were smaller teams, but both put up good scoring performances. In the 3-girl U15 team, Kiera Grady took 1st A points in the 6 Lap race and Emily Ross took 1stA points in the Speed Bounce to bring the team to 140 points and 2nd place overall.

The boys 4-man squad took 3rd place overall, missing out on 2nd place by 1 point. Sam Cox was the 1st A scorer in the Standing Long Jump, Paul Higgins was 1st B in the 2 Lap race and 2nd A in the Shot Put, whilst Ben Sutcliffe scored 1st A in Standing Triple Jump, 1st A in the 2 Lap race and 1st B in the Standing Long Jump.

Great results all round, which mean that each squad should be looking to take their team to the finals of the league early in the New Year where the top 6 teams in each age group compete for the honours of being NW Champions!
