Manchester Area XC League - Race 1 - Heaton Park Print
Written by Website
Thursday, 18 October 2012

The first race in the MACCL series takes place this weekend on Saturday 20th October at Heaton Park.

The MACCL website has plenty of details about the event, including detailed parking and travel instructions and a course map.

This is the only race in the 5 race series which is only for U13s and older (U11s start their series at the next race at Sherdley Park in St Helens).

The U13 Girls race is the first to take place, starting at 12.15pm, with U13 Boys & U15 Girls next up at 12.30pm.  Please arrive at 11am so that Nick can sort out numbers (which runners need to retain and reuse for each race in the series) but more importantly this gives time for runners to walk the course in advance.  If you've not done a MACCL race before, wellies are strongly advised for runners and supporters walking the course, as there's bound to be some mud somewhere (especially this year!!).

Good luck to everyone taking part!!

Can all athletes who wish to take part in the Manchester Area Cross Country League through this winter please let Nick Massey know by 5th October 2nd October (contact details on the website contacts page).

For U11s the series is 4 races, with 3 best counting as scoring, and for U13s and older it is a 5 race series, with the best 4 to count. The dates and locations are on the fixtures calendar, with the first race for U13s and older taking part on 20th October at Heaton Park.

The races are a great introduction to Cross Country running, and pull in athletes from all around the North West of all abilities. So whether you're taking part to win, or find out what you're capable of, or to keep some winter training up, its well worth entering. You might even like the mud, wind, rain and snow!!

Athletes taking part should try to commit to at least 2 or 3 of the races.

Harriers in long distance action over the weekend Print

Sunday, 16 September 2012

This weekend saw the first of the longer distance winter races with Harriers taking part.

At Marbury Park, the North West Counties Road Relays championships were being hosted by Vale Royal AC. Competitors ran in teams across a flat 2.7km course to earn County honours.

A full squad of Chris Larkin, Luke Southerton and James Ennis came 17th overall in the U13 Boys race and were the 5th placed Cheshire team. Chris and James are distance veterans, with both of them having taken part in cross country and road races for Harriers before, but this was Luke's first run out over a long distance, and his stint on the middle leg helped the team perform well overall.  Chris' leg of 9m56s was the 13th fastest of the 81 competitors, with Luke covering the distance in 11m18s and James in 11m20s.

Unfortunately the club wasn't able to get another full team out in any age group, but Keira Grady ran the first leg in the U15 Girls race, covering the 2.7km course in 10m54s. Full results are now available on the Cheshire AA website here.

On Sunday, both Chris and Keira were in action as individuals in the St Helen's Dream Trail Race, organised by St Helen's Sutton AC. Over a 4km course, both Chris and Kiera picked up medals, with Chris taking the boys bronze medal in 18m02s and Keira taking the girls silver medal (20m15s) in a race which was for ages 11 to 16. Aidan Larkin also took part in the junior fun run finishing 50th overall.

After a bit of "people power" via Facebook, Brio Leisure (who operate the Frodsham Leisure Centre) have confirmed that it is OK for athletes to take drinks into the sports hall. On their Facebook page they say

The Brio Leisure Team have been discussing all of your comments and we have decided to update the policy on refreshments in our sports halls to the following:
Drinks can be consumed in our Sports Halls providing they are in sealed sports bottles. Any spillages should be cleaned up by the user or reported to a member of the Brio Team so that it can be dealt with straight away. We will speak to all our user groups to ensure that this message is passed on.
We always promote the need to keep hydrated whilst taking part in any physical activity and have never banned people from drinking during exercise. We take all constructive feedback on board and will always work with our customers to help improve the service that we offer.
Thank you for your feedback

Well done to all the athletes who made it on the final weekend of the summer holidays:-

U11 Girls - Emilia, Charlotte, Skye, Rachel, Sophie, Megan, Lydia and Millie

U11 Boys - Oliver, Ben, Callum, Alfie, Owen, Jacob and Ben

U13 Girls - Sophie, Alex, Grace, Eleanor, Ellie and Charlotte

The final results will be totted up, and the final league placings published in the next couple of weeks.

That's the end of the summer track & field programme - so now its time to think about what you'll be doing over the winter - are you a Sportshall competitor, enjoying the warmth of an indoor arena, or do you prefer road running and cross country, getting muddy, wet and cold - or what about doing both?!?

There are plenty of fixtures for both over the coming months; and if you've never tried them out, what are you waiting for?  Have a look at the fixtures calendar to see what's coming up.

The club competes in the NorthWest Sportshall League, a series of indoor athletic events following the Sportshall competion format, for U11s, U13s and U15s each winter.

Sportshall Athletics was co-created by George Bunner with Ron Pickering in the 1970s, and George remains closely associated with the Harriers, having been one of the founders of our club.

The fixtures, which will see Harriers competing against clubs from Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales, have been added to the fixtures calendar.

  • Sunday 18th November - Kingsway, Widnes
  • Sunday 9th December - Kingsway, Widnes
  • Sunday 27th January - Venue TBC, date currently provisional
  • Sunday 3rd March - League Finals - Kingsway, Widnes

All training U11s, U13s and U15s should be taking part in these competitions, where the club has a great track record.

U13s and U15s have the added incentive that good performances in these league matches can lead to County selection for the regional and national finals, where club members have achieved national team prizes as well as individual medals in recent years.

If you want more details, speak to the coaches at training.

Over the last few weeks a number of major championships have taken place that club members have taken part in.

At the Northern Athletics U15/U17 Inter-Counties match in Wigan, Ben Sutcliffe, Ellie McCarthy, Emily Ross and Jenny Pyatt took on athletes from across the North of England representing Cheshire.

Ben came away with a bronze medal, finishing 3rd in a time of 12.97s in the U15 85m hurdles taking nearly a quarter of a second off his PB in the process.  Ben also finished 6th in the long jump with a leap of 5m15, another PB!

In the U15 shot put, Ellie McCarthy finished in 7th place with a throw of 7.43m, whilst in the U15 javelin Emily took 7th place with a throw of 24.81m and Jenny finished one place behind in 8th throwing 23.01m.  The Cheshire team (263pts) placed 3rd overall behind the massive teams of Yorkshire (399pts) and Lancashire (293pts).

Further afield, at the English Schools Athletics Association Track & Field Cup, Katie Dinsdale was in action running at this very prestigious and high quality event.  Representing Merseyside, and finishing in 6th place in her 100m heat in 12.95s, this was Katie's fastest electronically timed sprint.

Schools athletics successes for club members Print

Wednesday, 04 July 2012

Not all athletics in the UK is organised by clubs or individuals.

Helsby High School, which many Harriers attend, achieved the notable success of getting their Junior Girls team to the national final of the ESAA English Schools Track & Field Cup.  The school team finished 8th overall on the day, after a long trip down to Chelmsford for the final.

This weekend, one of the most prestigious junior athletic competitions in the country takes places at Gateshead this weekend.  With a qualification system similar to the Olympics, needing athletes to achieve qualifying times, heights and distances, the Aviva ESAA English Schools' 82nd Track & Field Championships is a high quality competition, and is also being shown on Sky Sports TV over the weekend.

Several former Harriers will be taking part, and even if you don't know anyone taking part it is a great showcase for young athletics which current Harriers can aspire to!
