Thursday, 06 September 2012

The club competes in the NorthWest Sportshall League, a series of indoor athletic events following the Sportshall competion format, for U11s, U13s and U15s each winter.

Sportshall Athletics was co-created by George Bunner with Ron Pickering in the 1970s, and George remains closely associated with the Harriers, having been one of the founders of our club.

The fixtures, which will see Harriers competing against clubs from Cheshire, Merseyside and North Wales, have been added to the fixtures calendar.

  • Sunday 18th November - Kingsway, Widnes
  • Sunday 9th December - Kingsway, Widnes
  • Sunday 27th January - Venue TBC, date currently provisional
  • Sunday 3rd March - League Finals - Kingsway, Widnes

All training U11s, U13s and U15s should be taking part in these competitions, where the club has a great track record.

U13s and U15s have the added incentive that good performances in these league matches can lead to County selection for the regional and national finals, where club members have achieved national team prizes as well as individual medals in recent years.

If you want more details, speak to the coaches at training.

Over the last few weeks a number of major championships have taken place that club members have taken part in.

At the Northern Athletics U15/U17 Inter-Counties match in Wigan, Ben Sutcliffe, Ellie McCarthy, Emily Ross and Jenny Pyatt took on athletes from across the North of England representing Cheshire.

Ben came away with a bronze medal, finishing 3rd in a time of 12.97s in the U15 85m hurdles taking nearly a quarter of a second off his PB in the process.  Ben also finished 6th in the long jump with a leap of 5m15, another PB!

In the U15 shot put, Ellie McCarthy finished in 7th place with a throw of 7.43m, whilst in the U15 javelin Emily took 7th place with a throw of 24.81m and Jenny finished one place behind in 8th throwing 23.01m.  The Cheshire team (263pts) placed 3rd overall behind the massive teams of Yorkshire (399pts) and Lancashire (293pts).

Further afield, at the English Schools Athletics Association Track & Field Cup, Katie Dinsdale was in action running at this very prestigious and high quality event.  Representing Merseyside, and finishing in 6th place in her 100m heat in 12.95s, this was Katie's fastest electronically timed sprint.

Schools athletics successes for club members Print

Not all athletics in the UK is organised by clubs or individuals.

Helsby High School, which many Harriers attend, achieved the notable success of getting their Junior Girls team to the national final of the ESAA English Schools Track & Field Cup.  The school team finished 8th overall on the day, after a long trip down to Chelmsford for the final.

This weekend, one of the most prestigious junior athletic competitions in the country takes places at Gateshead this weekend.  With a qualification system similar to the Olympics, needing athletes to achieve qualifying times, heights and distances, the Aviva ESAA English Schools' 82nd Track & Field Championships is a high quality competition, and is also being shown on Sky Sports TV over the weekend.

Several former Harriers will be taking part, and even if you don't know anyone taking part it is a great showcase for young athletics which current Harriers can aspire to!

Great day at Salford yesterday - but what was the result?! Print

Monday, 18 June 2012

There were some great individual and team performances at the meeting yesterday, culminating in two dominating wins for the U13G and U13B relay squads.

But what was the result?  To stay up in Northern 1, Harriers needed to finish at least 4th on the day, with the mostly likely battle being between the hosts, Salford Mets, and ourselves.

As the athletes and team managers left the track, no-one knew what the result was.

And we still don't!  We're keeping our eyes peeled and our ears close to the ground, so when the results are published we'll let you know as soon as possible.

Whatever the result, it was a great performance by all members of the team, with Grade 1 performances, new personal bests, fantastic relay performances and new experiences for some; you can all be proud of representing your club in this league!

Competing for your club!! Print
Written by Website
Wednesday, 30 May 2012

In just over a week's time, the club will be taking part in th second match of the season in the Cheshire Track & Field League. This is the main competitive league that the club enters each year, and has events for everyone from U11 up to senior athletes.

Every week there are lots of young athletes who come for training in the evening sessions, but they often then don't turn that valuable training into competing for the club.

Why not?

Track & field meetings are a great experience for young athletes, especially in the Cheshire League where the atmosphere is always friendly, welcoming and relaxed - of course, it's competitive too, and athletes will be there trying to achieve their personal bests so that they can be recorded on the Powerof10 website alongside the entries for Jess Ennis, Mo Farah, Goldie Sayers, Philips Idowu and the other elite British athletes.

We've put a poll on the website today (have a look on the right!) to get some feedback so you can let us know what stops you from turning out at meetings; we're very proud of the fact that the club is a friendly and welcoming place to train, but competing for the club is what it is all about - why not give it a try by joining your teammates on Saturday 9th June at the Trafford Athletics Club at their Longford Park track where we'll be taking on Trafford AC, Stockport Harriers, Vale Royal AC, East Cheshire Harriers, Crewe & Nantwich AC and Blackley & North Manchester AC.

Please let your team manager know whether you'll be turning out to proudly wear your black & orange vests on 9th June! (Click on the Club Contacts section to find mobile numbers for Gary, Paul, Jane & Clare, or click on their names to e-mail a message to them)
